Autumn Air

Saturday, September 29, 2012

The weather has certainly cooled down over here! School started and the sun over England just gave up trying to be warm. The highs have been in the upper 50s. Amazingly enough for this Florida girl, I'm not cold yet! Just a light jacket and I'm set.

The girls and I have spent some time outside enjoying the nice cool weather.

My not-so-little girl!
Sweet, sweet!

And I got such a sweet surprise last week when I came home from a lunch with some friends and found this waiting at my door!

Love you so much!!!!

Family Time

Saturday, September 22, 2012

Our girls are growing up too fast!

We try to make the most of every day with them. Here are some pictures of the time we've spent together:

Myla loves to ride on her princess bike (Ainsley wanted to help)

and she loved it!
Ainsley got a turn too..

Matt and I took a nice date night out to Cambridge. It was so nice to be child-free for an evening (although I did miss the girls). We took a "punt boat" out on the river - kind of like a gondola in Italy but the boat is flat and wide. It was a great way to see the city!

Our guide, Will, got dumped into the river at the end because it was his last day!

University of Cambridge
Established in 1209, the University of Cambridge is the second-oldest university in the entire United Kingdom! (University of Oxford being the oldest). Noteworthy alumni include Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Francis Bacon, Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking and C.S. Lewis (there are TONS of other very important people who studied at Cambridge.)

We also took a small family trip to Sandringham Estate, which is the Queen of England's summer home. For a few weeks of the year the orchards are open and you can come pick your own apples.

The best (and cutest) helpers ever!

A very nice bottle just for apple juice, but would you expect less from the Royal Family?

Birthday in Scotland

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Well, after Paris we did not have any trips planned for the month of September. However, I planned a trip literally last minute to Scotland for my birthday weekend (on Friday afternoon I booked train tickets and a hotel for the next day and surprised Matt when he got home). It's not really in my nature to do something like that, but I am so glad I did! We had a wonderful time in Edinburgh, Scotland, and we are definitely going back again someday!

Oh, and even though is is spelled "Edinburgh," the locals pronounce it "Edinbourough", or actually, "Edin-bra"

You can listen to this as you look through the pictures (I apologize for the last 5 seconds of the film where the last note is held out too long...)

some Scottish essentials

Edinburgh Castle
If you go to Edinburgh, you have to see the castle. It is in surprisingly good condition and there were guided tours so you learned a lot of history as you walked around. Also, it is still used as a military garrison to this day and, as such, houses the Royal Regiment of Scotland and the 52 Infantry Brigade. I couldn't believe that people actually live there!

I think it will be really great for my girls when they start learning about this history in school, and I'll be able to pull out all these pictures of places we've been and can say, "Look! There you are at the castle where that person lived" or "where that battle was fought" etc. Such a great opportunity to help them learn!

The landscape there was so beautiful!

Holyroodhouse - this is where the Queen stays when she comes to Scotland!

Picnic time!
Ainsley fit right in with her red (strawberry-blonde) hair and blue eyes. Speaking of red hair, we also saw Disney's new animated film, Brave. We thought it would be neat to see the movie while we were in Scotland. It was interesting to be around Scottish people while we watched it too, because they laughed at certain things during the movie because they understood the joke fully. Myla absolutely loved it but I think Ainsley wasn't quite ready to sit through a movie yet. I'm glad Ainsley has another red-haired princess to admire now, though!

Another thing that is a "must-do" while you're in Scotland, is try some haggis. You don't have to know what it is (trust me you don't want to know) but it is part of the culture. Matt and I tried it, and it was okay. I would compare it to a greasy sausage type of meat. Ainsley had some too, actually, and she ate it just fine. Unfortunately it came back a few minutes later...

At the end of the day, they had a fireworks display from the castle to celebrate the end of their summer festival. It was also a great way to end my birthday!

Voyage à Paris

Saturday, September 1, 2012

Since we are trying to take as many trips as we can before Matt goes away for a little while, he took leave this past Friday and  Monday so that we could have a nice long weekend. We decided to travel to Paris to see its famous sights, and to go to Disneyland-Paris of course!

Getting there, unfortunately, didn't go as we first planned. Matt had gone back to the States during the week prior to be with his family after his grandmother passed. Luckily, he made it there in great time but he ended up having trouble getting home. We were hoping that he would fly back on Tuesday, but he was not able to get a flight back until Thursday and it was to Germany instead of England. We decided that it would be silly for him to take a train through Paris back to London on Thursday and then turn around the next morning and take the train right back to Paris. I told him that I would just meet him in Paris with the girls the next day. This meant that I would single handedly take our two girls, all our luggage, and two strollers and somehow make it to Paris on time. I know you are waiting for the punch line because it sounds like a joke, right? I promise you it was not funny though! My friend, Tina, loaned me her large camping backpack that I stuffed as much as I could into it; what didn't fit didn't come! Here is a great shot of how we traveled:

(While we were traveling, Ainsley was really the one in the stroller and I had Myla sit on top on the handle bars. The other stroller was hung on the handle bars as well so it could roll as I walked.)

I had to switch trains twice and at one of the stops it was not handicap accessible, which meant going up and down stairs. Luckily, some of the locals took pity on me and helped me with the stairs. I did go up an escalator on my own though! I wish someone had filmed that, I'm sure it was quite comical.

All in all, I was extremely happy to see Matt waiting for me in Paris at the train station! The girls were so happy to see their daddy again too!

The next day we went to Disneyland. Here are a few magical moments:

Sleeping Beauty's Castle at night
It was really different with everything being in French but also a great experience overall. I thought that the girls might be too young to really enjoy it, but I was wrong! They loved it and were such troopers the whole day. I cannot wait to take them to the one in Florida!

The next morning we had a relaxing day in Paris. We started by walking to the Eiffel Tower and just enjoying the view.

We bought cheese on the way to the tower. This shop was stinky!!

As we walked through the market on the way to the tower we were serenaded by a street musician. I had to take a video!

A light lunch - Eiffel Tower in the background

We figured the easiest way to sight-see with two small children would be to take the Riverboat Tours. We got a great summed-up version of Paris and lots of information!

Notre Dame Cathedral
It took 200 years to build the Cathedral. The bells still ring for the hours and the large one, the "Bumblebee Emmanuel", rings for special occasions.

How Myla entertained herself on the Boat Tour

I had to take a walk down this famous street!

Arc de Triomphe

Later that night, we went back to the Eiffel Tower to see it all lit up and to see the light show that it does every night.

Here is the light show:

I wish we had more time to spend in Paris, it was a beautiful place!
